Boosting Global Trade: WCO & WTO Join Forces πŸŒπŸ“¦
The World Customs Organization – Organisation Mondiale des Douanes and World Trade Organization – WTO have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration on Customs and trade matters. Signed by WCO Secretary General Ian Saunders and WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on 21 January 2025 during the World Economic Forum, the agreement focuses on:
βœ… Enhancing cooperation on trade facilitation and Customs modernization
βœ… Delivering technical assistance to support WTO’s Trade Facilitation Agreement
βœ… Sharing insights on tariff classification and combating illicit trade
βœ… Aligning efforts on intellectual property rights enforcement
Why This Matters to ASSETS:
This partnership paves the way for smoother trade processes and improved Customs efficiency, key for African startups and SMEs looking to expand globally. The focus on technical assistance and capacity-building aligns with our mission to empower businesses under the AGOA, AfCFTA amongst others. Together, we can unlock greater opportunities in international trade and ensure African enterprises thrive on the global stage.
